If the wealth the rain pours down runs short, the farmers will set down their ploughs.

ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயல்என்னும்
வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்

By every means within your power, never pausing, do the work of virtue wherever and however it can be done.

ஒல்லும் வகையான் அறவினை ஓவாதே
செல்லும்வாய் எல்லாஞ் செயல்

The destiny that brings gain gives rise to tireless effort; the destiny that brings loss gives rise to idleness.

ஆகூழாற் றோன்று மசைவின்மை கைப்பொருள்
போகூழாற் றோன்று மடி

Effort not pursued through a means capable of completing it will expose its flaw even when many people stand together to support it.

ஆற்றின் வருந்தா வருத்தம் பலர்நின்று
போற்றினும் பொத்துப் படும்.

No undertaking need remain impossible merely because it is difficult, if it is thoughtfully guarded and performed with a non-forgetting mind as the instrument.

அரியவென் றாகாத வில்லைபொச் சாவாக்
கருவியாற் போற்றிச் செயின்.

Those who want their house to remain a worthy house must recognise sloth for what it is and live with deliberate effort.

மடியை மடியா ஒழுகல் குடியைக்
குடியாக வேண்டுபவர்.

For those sunk in sloth and without worthy effort, the house declines and faults multiply.

குடிமடிந்து குற்றம் பெருகு மடிமடிந்து
மாண்ட வுஞற்றில வர்க்கு.

Do not lose heart by saying, ‘This is too difficult.’ Sustained effort creates in us the capacity and distinction needed to complete it.

அருமை யுடைத்தென் றசாவாமை வேண்டும்
பெருமை முயற்சி தரும்.

Once a work has begun, guard it from failing through incompletion. The world withdraws its trust from those who repeatedly leave a work deficient.

வினைக்கண் வினைகெட லோம்பல் வினைக்குறை
தீர்ந்தாரிற் றீர்ந்தன் றுலகு.

The worthy pride called beneficence rests within the quality called persevering effort.

தாளாண்மை யென்னும் தகைமக்கட் டங்கிற்றே
வேளாண்மை என்னுஞ் செருக்கு.

Beneficence attempted without persevering capability fails, like a demanding instrument placed in hands not prepared to wield it.

தாளாண்மை யில்லாதான் வேளாண்மை பேடிகை
வாளாண்மை போலக் கெடும்.

One who seeks the work to be done rather than private pleasure becomes a supporting pillar, removing the suffering of those close to them.

இன்பம் விழையான் வினைவிழைவான் றன்கேளிர்
துன்பந் துடைத்தூன்றுந் தூண்.

Effort develops prosperity-producing work; lack of effort lets want enter. This does not make poverty proof of personal failure: opportunity, health, injustice, and disaster also shape outcomes.

முயற்சி திருவினை யாக்கு முயற்றின்மை
யின்மை புகுத்தி விடும்.

They say the goddess of misfortune dwells with entrenched sloth, while the lotus goddess of prosperity takes her stand at the feet of one free from sloth. These are literary personifications, not judgements about gender, body, colour, birth, poverty, or human worth.

மடியுளாண் மாமுகடி யென்ப மடியிலான்
றாளுளா டாமரையி னாள்

Lack of favourable endowment or fortune is blame to no one. The blame lies in knowing the action required and making no effort when it is genuinely possible.

பொறியின்மை யார்க்கும் பழியன் றறிவறிந்
தாள்வினை யின்மை பழி.

Even when fate prevents the intended result, effort is not wholly barren; it yields a return proportionate to the real exertion—skill, knowledge, evidence, or readiness for another opening.

தெய்வத்தா னாகா தெனினு முயற்சிதன்
மெய்வருத்தக் கூலி தரும்

Those who act without agitation or delay, adapting and persisting, make even the fate that obstructs their result turn its back.

ஊழையு முப்பக்கங் காண்ப ருலைவின்றித்
தாழா துஞற்று பவர்

Like a draught ox that draws its cart through every obstructed passage, one who can carry an undertaking onward makes adversity itself struggle for a way.

மடுத்தவா யெல்லாம் பகடன்னா னுற்ற
விடுக்க ணிடர்ப்பாடு டைத்து.

One who does not demand uninterrupted pleasure and understands effort's ordinary hardship as part of undertaking the work is not inwardly overthrown when that hardship arrives.

இன்பம் விழையா னிடும்பை யியல்பென்பான்
றுன்ப முறுத லிலன்.

When one receives the necessary hardship of worthy effort as part of its joy, a distinction arises that even rivals are moved to respect.

இன்னாமை யின்ப மெனக்கொளி னாகுந்தன்
னொன்னார் விழையுஞ் சிறப்பு.

Weigh the effort required for completion, the obstacles, and the great benefit reached after those obstacles are overcome; then act.

முடிவு மிடையூறு முற்றியாங் கெய்தும்
படுபயனும் பார்த்துச் செயல்.

That deserves to be called a country where resources reach residents without painful searching; a land that yields only after exhausting pursuit does not.

நாடென்ப நாடா வளத்தன நாடல்ல
நாட வளந்தரு நாடு.

Even when a fort possesses every excellence, it is effectively no fort for defenders who lack excellence in action.

எனைமாட்சித் தாகியக் கண்ணும் வினைமாட்சி
யில்லார்க ணில்ல தரண்.

Birth is alike for every living thing; distinction is not alike — and the reason is the difference in the work that is done.

பிறப்பொக்கு மெல்லா வுயிர்க்குஞ் சிறப்பொவ்வா
செய்தொழில் வேற்றுமை யான்.

Those who possess greatness are able to carry through, by the very way of doing them, the deeds that are hard and rare — and the commentary adds: even when their own means are poor.

பெருமை யுடையவ ராற்றுவா ராற்றி
னருமை யுடைய செயல்.

For a person there is nothing of greater dignity than the greatness that says, of the work to be done, 'I will not stay my hand.'

கருமஞ் செயவொருவன் கைதூவே னென்னும்
பெருமையிற் பீடுடைய தில்.

Exertion, and understanding grown full: a household lengthens by the unbroken work that carries both of them.

ஆள்வினையு மான்ற வறிவு மெனவிரண்டி
னீள்வினையா னீளுங் குடி.

For those who work at their own household without putting it off, the finish arrives of itself, and the way to it never has to be devised.

சூழாமற் றானே முடிவெய்துந் தங்குடியைத்
தாழா துஞற்று பவர்க்கு.

For a person, what is called good mastery is this — bringing into being the mastery of the house one was born into, and taking it as one's own.

நல்லாண்மை யென்ப தொருவற்குத் தான்பிறந்த
வில்லாண்மை யாக்கிக் கொளல்.

The body of the one who screens their own household from every ill — is it a vessel for sorrow alone, and for nothing else at all?

இடும்பைக்கே கொள்கலங் கொல்லோ குடும்பத்தைக்
குற்ற மறைப்பா னுடம்பு.

Trouble cuts through the base and down it comes: the household that has no good person to come up beside it and prop it.

இடுக்கண்கால் கொன்றிட வீழு மடுத்தூன்று
நல்லா ளிலாத குடி.

However people circle through other trades, the world comes at last to stand behind the plough; so, with all its hardship borne, tillage and nothing else is the head of all work.

சுழன்று மேர்ப்பின்ன துலக மதனா
லுழந்து முழவே தலை.

Those who plough are the pin the world's people are fastened to: they bear up everyone who cannot do that work and rises to another trade.

உழுவா ருலகத்தார்க் காணியஃ தாற்றா
தெழுவாரை யெல்லாம் பொறுத்து.

If the earth is dried until a measure of its dust comes down to a quarter of that weight, the crop will thicken and yield without even a handful of manure.

தொடிப்புழுதி கஃசா உணக்கின் பிடித்தெருவும்
வேண்டாது சாலப் படும்.

Nothing is so hard-faced as the hardness that says: we shall be rid of the pain of want by asking for it.

இன்மை யிடும்பை யிரந்துதீர் வாமென்னும்
வன்மையின் வன்பாட்ட தில்.

Even if what your own effort brought is gruel as thin as clear water, there is nothing sweeter than eating it.

தெண்ணீர் அடுபுற்கை யாயினுந் தாடந்த
துண்ணலி னூங்கினிய தில்.
