Returning what was given

Children are called their parents' true wealth because the good they freely do brings benefit back to those who raised them—not because a child is anyone's possession.

தம்பொரு ளென்பதம் மக்கள் அவர்பொருள்
தந்தம் வினையான் வரும்

In its father-son frame, the child's finest return is to live with such understanding and conduct that people wonder what merit the parent earned to receive such a child. This is praise, not a debt children must repay.

மகன்றந்தைக் காற்று முதவி யிவன்றந்தை
யென்னோற்றான் கொல்லெனுஞ் சொல்

A kindness done for you by someone you had never helped first is so rare that all the earth and all the sky, given in return, could hardly repay it.

செய்யாமற் செய்த உதவிக்கு வையகமும்
வானகமும் ஆற்றல் அரிது.

What is owed for a help is not set by the size of the help, but by the worth of the one who received it.

உதவி வரைத்தன்று உதவி உதவி
செயப்பட்டார் சால்பின் வரைத்து.

Even a trader thrives who guards another's interest as his own, taking no excess and giving no less.

வாணிகம் செய்வார்க்கு வாணிகம் பேணிப்
பிறவும் தமபோல் செயின்.

One who does not want suffering-producing wrongs to pursue and afflict oneself should not do evil-class deeds to others.

தீப்பால தான்பிறர்கண் செய்யற்க நோய்ப்பால
தன்னை அடல் வேண்டாதான்.

Giving means placing what is needed in the hands of someone who has little. Other gifts may still be good, but they often carry an expectation of return.

வறியார்க்கொன் றீவதே யீகைமற் றெல்லாங்
குறியெதிர்ப்பை நீர துடைத்து

The verse warns that pain deliberately done to another will return to the doer of its own accord, as surely as afternoon follows morning.

பிறர்க்கின்னா முற்பகற் செய்யிற் தமக்கின்னா
பிற்பகற் றாமே வரும்

It is better not to acquire the poor friendship of those who fail to become protection even after help has been rendered to them.

செய்தேமஞ் சாராச் சிறியவர் புன்கேண்மை
யெய்தலி னெய்தாமை நன்று.

Those who plough are the pin the world's people are fastened to: they bear up everyone who cannot do that work and rises to another trade.

உழுவா ருலகத்தார்க் காணியஃ தாற்றா
தெழுவாரை யெல்லாம் பொறுத்து.

If there were nobody left who asks, this great world of cool wide places would be like a wooden figure going out and coming back.

இரப்பாரை யில்லாயி னீர்ங்கண்மா ஞால
மரப்பாவை சென்றுவந் தற்று.
