cārpuṇarntu cārpukeṭa voḻukiṉ maṟṟaḻittuc / cārtarā cārtaru nōy
If one realizes the true support and lives so that attachments cease, the sufferings that would cling can no longer destroy that realization and conduct or cling afterward.
▸Other translations · Pope (1886) & Aiyar (1916)
“The true 'support' who knows- rejects 'supports' he sought before- / Sorrow that clings all destroys, shall cling to him no more.”
“Behold the man who understandeth the means of his salvation and laboureth to conquer all attachments: the ills that he is yet to suffer depart from him.”

Parimelazhagar says that knowing the supreme support and living free of the two attachments prevents karmic sufferings from destroying that realization and conduct, so they do not attach later. Nōy here is doctrinal suffering, not a promise of immunity from illness, violence, disaster, or grief, and never a basis for blaming victims.
