Within its soul-and-body philosophy, the verse says embodied life exists so love may be enacted. A modern reader may take love as a central purpose without making it the only permitted life path.

13th century · public domain

Parimelazhagar’s own words come first, unaltered. The plain reading follows below.

The wise say that the rare bond of soul with body — life itself taking on a frame of bone — exists for one purpose: so that we may love. The whole point of being given a life in a body is to use it to love others.
