Greatness is the absence of conceit; smallness is climbing onto conceit and riding it — and the commentary adds that the ride ends at the far edge of arrogance.

Greatness is seeing that the distinction is simply your own nature and staying free of conceit, even where the cause for it is really present. Smallness is taking it up where there is no cause, riding conceit to its far end, and stopping there.
