Chapter 103 / 133 · Kurals 1021–1030

The Way of Building a Family Name

குடிசெயல்வகை
About this chapter

On the sustained work of raising a household's standing, and on effort that outlasts the person making it.

குடி is the word to settle before anything else, because the English printed beside it settles it wrongly. Pope has 'the race's line' at 1022 and 'I'll make my race renowned' at 1023 — that is nineteenth-century English and it is not what Valluvar's word carries. A குடி is a household, and the line of family that household stands in: the people whose affairs are yours to keep going. It is not caste, and it is not rank by birth. Chapter 96 already reads குடிமை the same way, through cultivated character rather than inherited social rank, and this chapter attaches a verb to it. Parimelazhagar names the instrument at 1022 in a single phrase — இடையறாத கருமச்செயல், work that does not break off — and that, not birth, is what raises a household here.

The chapter opens before its own subject word appears. There is no குடி anywhere in 1021: only a piece of work, a hand, and a sentence, கைதூவேன், I will not stay my hand — and while the work is still unfinished that sentence is ranked above everything else a person could be called great for. 1022 immediately takes half of it back, because exertion on its own is not the claim; exertion together with ஆன்ற அறிவு, understanding grown full, is. What follows is a set of returns, and they are carefully small ones. 1023 says only that once the resolve is spoken something goes and stands ahead of you. 1024 says the way to the finish will not have to be devised. 1025 puts into words the condition the other nine leave silent, குற்றம் இலனாய், blameless, and only then does the world close round as kin. And 1028 removes the last excuse by denying that this work has a season at all.

Three limits need saying out loud. ஆள்வினை at 1022 and ஆண்மை at 1026 both carry a gendered reading, and it is not only the translators': the University of Madras Tamil Lexicon, which these pages link to, heads ஆள்வினை as 'Manly effort, enterprise', and ஆண்மை is read both from ஆண், a male, and from ஆள், to govern. What fixes the sense in these two couplets is the commentator. Parimelazhagar glosses ஆள்வினை with one word, முயற்சி, and expands இல்லாண்மை at 1026 as தான் பிறந்த குடியினை ஆளும் தன்மை, the capacity to govern the house one was born into. That is the reading these pages take; the other one is shown to you rather than hidden. Then 1029, which asks whether the body of someone who shields a household from every ill is a vessel for sorrow and nothing else — that is a question about what the role costs, not an instruction to carry it alone. And nothing here ranks families against each other. The chapter praises the work; it never says a person is worth what their household has managed to become.

கருமஞ் செயவொருவன் கைதூவே னென்னும்
பெருமையிற் பீடுடைய தில்.

தன் குடியை உயர்த்த ஒருவன் தொடங்கிய வேலை முடியும்வரை ‘நான் கை ஓயமாட்டேன்’ என்று சொல்கிறான். அந்த முயற்சிப் பெருமையைவிட ஒருவனுக்கு உயர்ந்த பெருமை வேறொன்றும் இல்லை.

For a person there is nothing of greater dignity than the greatness that says, of the work to be done, 'I will not stay my hand.'AI draft

Kural 1022✦ Narrative

ஆள்வினையு மான்ற வறிவு மெனவிரண்டி
னீள்வினையா னீளுங் குடி.

முயற்சி, நிறைந்த அறிவு — இவ்விரண்டும் உடைய, இடையறாத வேலையால் ஒருவன் குடி உயரும். (‘இடையறாத கருமச்செயல்’ என்பது பரிமேலழகர் இதற்குத் தரும் சொல்.)

Exertion, and understanding grown full: a household lengthens by the unbroken work that carries both of them.AI draft

Kural 1023✦ Narrative

குடிசெய்வ லென்னு மொருவற்குத் தெய்வ
மடிதற்றுத் தான்முந் துறும்.

‘என் குடியை உயர்த்துவேன்’ என்று உறுதிகொண்டு அதற்கான வேலைகளில் ஒருவன் முயல்கிறான். அப்போது தெய்வம் ஆடையை இறுக்கிக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு அவனுக்கு முன்னால் சென்று நிற்கும்.

To the one who says 'I will raise my household', the divine power itself goes ahead and stands there — with its cloth gathered at the waist, in Parimelazhagar's reading of that phrase.AI draft

Kural 1024✦ Narrative

சூழாமற் றானே முடிவெய்துந் தங்குடியைத்
தாழா துஞற்று பவர்க்கு.

தம் குடிக்கு ஆகும் வேலையை விரைந்து செய்பவர்களுக்கு, அது எப்படி முடியும் என்று அவர்களே திட்டமிட வேண்டியதில்லை; அது தானே முடிவை எய்தும்.

For those who work at their own household without putting it off, the finish arrives of itself, and the way to it never has to be devised.AI draft

Kural 1025✦ Narrative

குற்ற மிலனாய்க் குடிசெய்து வாழ்வானைச்
சுற்றமாச் சுற்று முலகு.

குற்றமானவற்றைச் செய்யாமல் தன் குடியை உயர்த்தி வாழ்பவனை, உலகத்தார் தாமே வந்து சுற்றமாகச் சூழ்ந்துகொள்வார்கள்.

The one who does nothing blameworthy and lives raising their own household — the world comes and closes round that person as kin.AI draft

Kural 1026✦ Narrative

For a person, what is called good mastery is this — bringing into being the mastery of the house one was born into, and taking it as one's own.AI draft

Kural 1027✦ Narrative

அமரகத்து வன்கண்ணர் போலத் தமரகத்து
மாற்றுவார் மேற்றே பொறை.

போர்க்களத்திற்குச் சென்றவர் பலராயினும், போரைத் தாங்குவது வலியவர் மேல் நிற்பது போல, ஒரு குடியில் பிறந்தவர் பலராயினும், அதன் பாரத்தைச் சுமப்பது அதற்கு இயன்றவர் மேலேயே நிற்கும்.

Like the unflinching in the midst of battle, so among one's own people too: the load rests on those able to bear it.AI draft

Kural 1028✦ Narrative

குடிசெய்வார்க் கில்லை பருவ மடிசெய்து
மானங் கருதக் கெடும்.

குடியை உயர்த்துவோர் அச்செயலை நோக்காமல், காலத்தை நோக்கிச் சோர்ந்திருந்து மானத்தையும் கருதினால் குடி கெடும். ஆகவே அவர்களுக்குக் காலம் பார்த்துச் செய்வது என்பது இல்லை.

There is no season for those who set out to raise their household. Slacken, and stop to weigh your own dignity, and the household is ruined.AI draft

Kural 1029✦ Narrative

இடும்பைக்கே கொள்கலங் கொல்லோ குடும்பத்தைக்
குற்ற மறைப்பா னுடம்பு.

மூவகைத் துன்பமும் வரக்கூடிய தன் குடியை, அவை வந்து சேராமல் காக்க முயல்பவனுடைய உடம்பு — அது அம்முயற்சியின் துன்பத்திற்கு மட்டும்தானா கொள்கலம்? இன்பத்திற்கு அன்றோ?

The body of the one who screens their own household from every ill — is it a vessel for sorrow alone, and for nothing else at all?AI draft

Kural 1030✦ Narrative

Trouble cuts through the base and down it comes: the household that has no good person to come up beside it and prop it.AI draft
