The Dread of Begging
On the fear of having to ask, and on why a life that never needs to is worth arranging for.
This chapter is the hardest in the book to place a page beside, and the reason is worth saying before anything else. Read quickly, இரவச்சம் is ten couplets telling people who have to ask that they should be ashamed. 1066 says nothing brings the tongue lower than asking. 1069 and 1070 have a person's life going out of them at the sound of a refusal.
That reading is available and it is not what the chapter does. Four of the ten turn on கரப்பவர், the person who conceals what they have. 1067 is a request the speaker makes from inside — இரப்பன், I too am asking — and the one thing it asks is that you not go to somebody who hides. 1068 makes concealing the rock the boat breaks on. 1069 says the heart melts at the thought of asking and stops altogether at the thought of the refusal. And 1070 closes the chapter by turning to the person who said no and asking where their own life goes to hide. The contempt here is for hiding, not for needing.
What the chapter prefers is a situation, not a class of person. 1061 says not-needing-to-ask is worth many times over what asking brings, and it says so about the best case — Parimelazhagar's கண் அன்னார், people like one's own eyes, who give gladly and conceal nothing. The man who does not ask is not someone who came out ahead: the commentary is explicit that his வறுமை கூர்தல், his poverty deepens. 1064 measures the composure that will not ask even when there is nothing left, and says nothing whatever about anyone who does ask.
Two verses need reading carefully. 1062 is a curse, and it is aimed upward: if the maker of the world meant life here to be kept up by asking, let him wander and perish too — Parimelazhagar calls him அக்கொடியோன், that cruel one. A reader in hardship meeting that line meets Valluvar angry on their behalf. And 1063 condemns a plan rather than a person: வன்மை attaches to the reasoning that want will be ended by asking rather than by trying, which is why its scenes are all of somebody who had a way open and did not take it.
1065 is the one couplet here that says what to do rather than what to dread, and it is the one a reader can use: thin gruel your own effort brought is sweeter than anything. It is meagre food and the page does not pretend otherwise.
The chapter before this one, இரவு, treats asking with dignity and finds a grace in it. The two are not in contradiction. 1053 finds the grace in the standing; 1066 finds the lowering in the speaking. Both are true at once, and neither page corrects the other.
