Chapter 43 / 133 · Kurals 421–430

Possession of Knowledge

அறிவுடைமை
About this chapter

On discerning consequences, protecting oneself and others through understanding, and recognising what deserves fear or confidence.

Verse 421 gives the definition the chapter works from and it is defensive rather than clever: wisdom is the instrument that guards against ruin, and an inner fortress that enemies cannot pull down. Not brilliance. Something that holds.

The most useful verse is 426, and it is one line long: wisdom is conducting yourself with the world in the manner by which the world itself lives. Not cleverness applied to people — the ability to move among them without constant friction. Verse 425 says the same thing as an image: the wise embrace the world in friendship and stay steady there, neither opening suddenly like a flower nor closing later.

Verse 428 is the one to keep, because it corrects both directions at once. Not fearing what ought to be feared is folly; fearing what deserves fear is what a knowledgeable person does. Courage is not the absence of fear here, and caution is not weakness — the whole test is whether the fear matches the thing. Verse 429 follows through: no suffering arrives to make somebody tremble who saw it coming and prepared.
