Chapter 42 / 133 · Kurals 411–420

Learning by Listening

கேள்வி
About this chapter

On attentive listening as nourishment for understanding, especially when direct study is unavailable or incomplete.

Verse 414 is why this chapter exists, and it is the kindest sentence in the section on learning. Even if a person has not studied, let them listen — and what they heard will be a support like a staff in a time of weakness. Not everybody had access to books. Everybody has ears, and here that counts as a real education rather than a consolation.

Verse 412 is the line people quote and it is deliberately extreme: only when there is no nourishment left for the ear should a little be given to the stomach. Verse 416 makes it usable — listen to good and useful truths however small their measure, and each measure yields its own corresponding fullness. Small amounts count.

Verse 417 is the practical payoff. Those whose listening has accumulated through careful discernment will not voice a foolish claim, even when they have first-hand grounds to. That is the whole benefit stated without flattery: it is not that you know more, it is that you say less that is wrong. And 419 adds the tell — humility in speech is difficult for anybody who has not listened much.
