Chapter 24 / 133 · Kurals 231–240

Renown

About this chapter

On the honour that follows a life of worthy giving and the enduring public memory of a life lived without blame.

Almost everything written about reputation is about managing it. This chapter is not, and that is the reason to read it. Valluvar never once tells you to seek praise. He tells you what praise is a by-product of, and then asks a question that is much harder to get away from: if nothing you did is worth repeating after you, what exactly was produced?

The ten verses build one argument. Renown follows giving — specifically, giving to somebody who asked and had nothing (231, 232). Of everything on earth, it is the only thing that does not perish (233). Then the chapter turns and becomes uncomfortable. If you have not lived in a way that earns praise, do not resent the people who think little of you, because you have not looked at yourself (237). And it closes on a hard image: those who live without reproach are the ones who are alive, and those who live without renown are not (240).

Worth saying plainly: the renown Valluvar means is not fame and has nothing to do with being known widely. It is what remains true about you when the people who benefited describe you to somebody who never met you.

Kural 231✦ Narrative

Give to people in poverty, and live so that honour grows from that giving; the Kural says human life has no other gain apart from such renown.AI draft

Kural 232✦ Narrative

Whatever people say in praise comes to rest on those who give a person in poverty the one thing requested.AI draft

Kural 233✦ Narrative

In this world, nothing endures without passing away except exalted renown that has no equal.AI draft

Kural 234✦ Narrative

If a person creates enduring renown that reaches the earth's bounds, the Kural poetically says the celestial world will honour that person rather than the sages already there.AI draft

Kural 235✦ Narrative

Material loss that becomes gain for the enduring ‘body’ of renown, and bodily death through which that renown remains present, are difficult achievements except for people of rare discernment.AI draft

Kural 236✦ Narrative

If one is born as a human being, be born with qualities that give rise to worthy renown; for those without such qualities, the Kural's severe rhetoric says animal birth would be better than human birth.AI draft

Kural 237✦ Narrative

Those who do not live in a way that earns worthy praise do not examine themselves; why, then, do they resent the people who scorn them?AI draft

Kural 238✦ Narrative

If people fail to gain the remainder called renown, the Kural says the good will call that itself a reproach belonging to all people of the world.AI draft

Kural 239✦ Narrative

The Kural poetically says that the land bearing a body without renown will see its blameless, abundant yield diminish.AI draft

Kural 240✦ Narrative

Those who live so that reproach is absent are the ones who truly live; those who live so that renown is absent are, in the Kural's severe metaphor, people who do not live.AI draft
