Giving
On giving to people in need, the dignity of relieving hunger, and generosity that does not depend on repayment.
The chapter defines its own term before it praises anything. Kural 221 says that giving to those in need is the only thing that counts as ஈகை; what is handed over in expectation of return is an exchange, and belongs under a different name. That single line carries the rest of the chapter.
Kural 222 pushes further. Receiving is not good however highly anyone speaks of it, and giving would remain right even if there were no heaven to reward it. The virtue here is not held in place by its payoff.
Hunger is the chapter's centre. Kural 225 ranks the one who relieves another's hunger above the ascetic who endures his own, and kural 226 calls relieving it the safest place a person can store wealth.
The attention does not rest only on the giver. Kural 224 says the asking is not pleasant to the giver either, until the asker's face brightens. Kural 229 says that eating alone from a full store is harder than living by asking - which puts the shame on the hoarder rather than on the person who had to ask. Kural 230 closes by calling death bitter, and living without being able to give worse than death.

Giving means placing what is needed in the hands of someone who has little. Other gifts may still be good, but they often carry an expectation of return.AI draft

Even if receiving were praised as a path to heaven, dependence on it is painful; even if no heaven followed, giving would still be good.AI draft

Being made to ask is painful; that pain lasts for the giver until the person who asked can leave with a relieved face.AI draft
