Choosing People for Responsibilities

About this chapter

On assigning work after examining a person's fitness for it, matching responsibility to proven ability, and supporting the person once chosen.

Verse 517 is the sentence every manager should have. Examine and decide that this person can complete this work by this means — and then leave the work in their charge. The deciding is yours. After it, the work is theirs.

Verse 518 completes it and is more often neglected: having decided somebody is fit for a task, establish them in the standing that task requires. Responsibility without the authority to carry it is set out here as an error on the assigner's part, not a failure on the doer's.

Verse 516 gives the three things that must line up — the person, the work, and the time — and says to assign only when all three fit. Verse 515 adds what fitness actually means: somebody who knows how to do it and can endure the difficulties the work and its obstacles produce. Endurance is listed as a qualification alongside skill.

And 519 is the one that protects good people from politics. Fortune leaves the ruler who listens to resentful voices and misreads the easy familiarity that comes from somebody doing the work well, day after day.

Kural 511✦ Narrative

A task should be assigned only to one who knows how to do it, can endure the difficulties caused by the work and its obstacles, and can bring it to completion—not to someone merely because they are personally dear.AI draft
