Chapter 87 / 133 · Kurals 861–870

The Character of Enmity

பகைமாட்சி
About this chapter

On the strengths, weaknesses, and conditions of enmity within a ruler's strategic frame, without treating aggression as personal virtue.

This chapter reads as strategy, and the useful half of it is a portrait of what makes a person easy to defeat. Verse 864: somebody who never leaves anger and has no self-command can be overcome by anyone, at any time, anywhere. Verse 863 lists four more — fearing what need not be feared, not learning what must be known, having no accord with others, and refusing to give.

Read as a checklist about yourself rather than about opponents, it becomes the most practical thing in the section. Every item is a self-inflicted vulnerability, and 868 states the consequence directly: no cultivated virtue and many faults leaves you without allies, and that lack is itself what makes you easy to attack.

Verse 861 gives the strategic rule the chapter is built on — do not take up enmity with those stronger than you, and do not shrink from it with those weaker. It is honest counsel for a ruler in a hostile world. Read at ordinary scale, the more valuable instruction is the one implied throughout: the surest way to stop being an easy target is to remove the faults listed here, not to find weaker people.
