Chapter 94 / 133 · Kurals 931–940

Gambling

சூது
About this chapter

On gambling's deceptive wins, escalating losses, and damage to livelihood, character, relationships, and the capacity to meet ordinary duties.

Verse 931 makes the argument in a single image and it is enough on its own. Do not desire gambling even when you can win — what you won is the fish swallowing the hook's metal, taking it for food. The win is the mechanism. Nothing else in the chapter is needed to make the point, though nine more verses follow.

Verse 932 does the arithmetic: those who gain one and lose a hundred — is there so much as one road left by which they might reach anything? And 940 closes with the observation that explains why warnings do not work. Just as the gambler comes to love gambling more each time he loses by it, the life within holds its love for the body more the more it suffers there. The attachment grows through the losing, not despite it.

Verse 937 names the loss nobody counts: the time already set aside for virtue, for livelihood and for enjoyment goes into the gaming ground. And 939 lists what fails to arrive — clothing, wealth, food, renown and learning. Five things, none of which is the money you lost.

Kural 931✦ Narrative

Kural 932✦ Narrative

For gamblers who gain one and lose a hundred, is there so much as a single road left by which they might reach what is good and live well?AI draft

Kural 933✦ Narrative

If the stake on the rolling dice is called without pause, both the wealth gathered and the revenue still coming in will leave and settle somewhere outside.AI draft

Kural 934✦ Narrative

Gambling brings on many small humiliations a person never had before and destroys the standing he already had; for producing sheer destitution there is not one thing to match it.AI draft

Kural 935✦ Narrative

The dice, the gaming hall, and the skill of their own hands — the men who were proud of all three and let go of none of them had once been men of substance, and became men with nothing.AI draft

Kural 936✦ Narrative

Those who have been covered over by the Misfortune that goes here under the name of gambling will not fill their bellies in this life, and will be churned about in torment in the next.AI draft

Kural 937✦ Narrative

If the time already set aside for virtue, for livelihood and for enjoyment goes into the gaming ground, that spending destroys both the wealth a family has long been used to and the character built in the same slow way.AI draft

Kural 938✦ Narrative

Gambling destroys the wealth of the one who takes it up, then makes him take falsehood upon himself, then destroys the compassion that rises in his mind, and by that route brings him suffering in both worlds.AI draft

Kural 939✦ Narrative

Clothing, wealth, food, renown and learning — all five of these will fail to reach him, if he takes up gambling as his amusement.AI draft

Kural 940✦ Narrative

Just as the gambler comes to love gambling more each time he loses by it, so the life within holds its love for the body more each time it suffers through it.AI draft
