To tend, without fail, the duty owed to five — the ancestors, the gods, guests, kin, and oneself — is the household's foremost virtue.
▸Other translations · Pope (1886) & Aiyar (1916)
“The manes, God, guests, kindred, self, in due degree, These five to cherish well is chiefest charity.”
“Five are the duties of the householder, namely, the offering of oblations to the dead, the performance of sacrifices to the Gods, the doing of hospitality, the rendering of help unto relations, and the looking after of one's own self.”

The foremost household duty is faithfully to tend five spheres: ancestors, deities, new guests, relatives, and oneself. The self is included because all other duties require a living person able to perform them.
