Chapter 5 / 133 · Kurals 41–50

Domestic Life

இல்வாழ்க்கை
About this chapter

The fifth chapter of the Kural and the first of the household-virtue section. Valluvar turns from the strength of virtue in general to the life in which most people will practise it: the home. The householder, he says, is the mainstay of the other three orders of life and the support of the renouncer, the poor, and the unmourned dead. A home run on love and virtue — fearing blame, sharing food, keeping the five duties — is not a lesser path than renunciation but its equal, even its better; one who lives rightly in the world is honoured among the gods.

The most radical claim in this chapter is easy to walk past, because it is repeated so calmly. It is that an ordinary household, run properly, is not a lesser path than renunciation. Verse 46 asks what more anybody gains by going off to another path. Verse 47 places the householder foremost among all who strive toward release. Verse 48 says such a home has more endurance than the ascetic life. And 50 closes by counting that person among the gods.

What that householder actually does is not grand, and that is the point. They fear wrongdoing and share the meal before eating it (44). They keep the duty owed to five — ancestors, gods, guests, kin, and themselves (43). They hold love and virtue together, love as the home's nature and virtue as its fruit (45). None of this requires leaving anywhere or giving anything up.

Read this chapter if you have ever suspected the real spiritual work was happening somewhere other than where you live. Valluvar's answer is that it is happening at your table, and that the people who left are being supported by the people who stayed (41, 42).
