Chapter 40 / 133 · Kurals 391–400

Learning

கல்வி
About this chapter

On learning deeply, living by what one learns, and recognising education as enduring wealth across places and circumstances.

Verse 391 contains a condition most praise of learning leaves out. Learn what is worth learning, without distortion — and then live in a way that accords with it. The second half is not decoration. It is what makes the first half count, and it is stated before anything else in the chapter.

Verse 396 gives the image everybody keeps: as water rises in a sandy well in proportion to the digging, understanding rises in a person in proportion to their learning. Nothing is promised for free, and the return is proportional. Verse 397 makes the practical case that has outlived its century — for somebody who learns, any country and any town can become a place of belonging.

Verse 394 is the one nobody expects in a chapter on scholarship. The art of a learned person, it says, is to meet people so gladly that after parting they go on wanting the next meeting. Learning is being measured by what it does in a room. And 400 closes with the claim the chapter is built on: education is the one wealth that cannot be destroyed, and everything else is not wealth of that kind.
