The Utterance of Pleasant Words

About this chapter

The tenth chapter of the Kural, 'the speaking of pleasant things.' Placed after hospitality — for a warm welcome begins in warm speech — these verses praise words that are kind, tender, and true. Pleasant words, Valluvar insists, are not flattery: they are blended with genuine affection and free of all deceit, spoken by those who have seen what is right. He ranks a glad face and a kind word above even a generous gift, names humility-with-kind-speech a person's only real ornament, and promises that kind words bring good fortune here and merit hereafter. To deal in harsh words when kind ones are there to be spoken, the chapter ends, is to reach past ripe fruit for the bitter unripe.

The first verse settles what the chapter is not about. Kind speech here is warmth joined to freedom from deceit, spoken by people who discern what is right (91). Not flattery, then, and not agreeableness. Sweetness without truth does not qualify at the first line, which saves the reader nine verses of misunderstanding.

After that it becomes practical and slightly humbling. Verse 92 says a welcoming manner and kind words can be worth more than wholehearted giving — though not, as the commentary is careful about, instead of food or shelter when those are what is needed. Verse 95 names humility and kind speech as a person's real ornament, meaning non-arrogance rather than submission. Verse 96 makes the mechanism plain: look for words that actually benefit the other person, say them kindly, and wrongs shrink while virtue grows.

It closes on an image you will remember. Speaking needlessly hurtful words when kind and truthful ones were available is choosing the unripe fruit while the ripe one hangs there (100). Note what it does not say: it never asks you to leave the hard thing unsaid. It asks why you reached past the ripe one.

Kural 91✦ Narrative

Truly kind speech blends tenderness with freedom from deceit and comes from people who discern what is right. Warmth and truth belong together, without flattery or manipulation.AI draft

Kural 92✦ Narrative

A welcoming manner and kind words can be finer even than wholehearted material giving—but they do not replace food, medicine, shelter, access, or other needed help.AI draft

Kural 93✦ Narrative

Virtue can live in a warm reception followed by sincere kind speech. Welcome may be communicated through words and actions when facial expression differs.AI draft

The verse promises freedom from suffering poverty to one whose speech brings joy to everyone. That is a social-ethical assurance, not a financial guarantee or explanation of poverty.AI draft

Humility and kind speech are a person's true adornment; no external ornament equals them. Humility here is non-arrogance, not submission or self-erasure.AI draft

When one seeks words that genuinely benefit others and speaks them kindly, wrongs diminish and virtue grows. Necessary firmness and urgent truth can still be ethical.AI draft

Kural 97✦ Narrative

Speech that benefits others and never leaves kindness produces right social accord now and virtue hereafter. The next-life result belongs to the verse's religious framework.AI draft

Kural 98✦ Narrative

Kind words free from harmful pettiness give happiness in this life and the next, the verse says. The afterlife and happiness results are claims, not guarantees.AI draft

Kural 99✦ Narrative

Why would one who has experienced the joy of kind speech give needless harshness to others? Firm boundaries, safety warnings, and truthful resistance are not needless cruelty.AI draft

Kural 100✦ Narrative

Speaking needlessly hurtful words when kind, truthful ones are available is like choosing unripe fruit over ripe. The image does not forbid necessary directness.AI draft
