Chapter 27 / 133 · Kurals 261–270

Austerity

About this chapter

On bearing one's own hardship while refusing to harm other lives, and on the discipline and moral force attributed to austerity.

Read verse 261 before you decide what this chapter is about, because it defines austerity with two halves and most people only remember one. Bearing the hardship that comes through your own discipline is the first. Causing no distress to other life is the second. Together, and only together, they are austerity. A discipline that makes other people suffer does not qualify at the opening line.

What follows is more practical than the subject sounds. Verse 262 says austerity succeeds only for those already formed by it — taking it up unprepared is futile, which is an unusually honest thing for a chapter recommending something to admit. Verse 267 gives the image that carries the chapter: gold shines brighter the more it is heated, and so do those capable of this the harder it presses.

And 263 asks a question that quietly defends ordinary life. Have householders forgotten their own austerity because they are busy supplying the renouncers with what keeps them alive? The chapter that most praises renunciation pauses to notice who is paying for it.
