The Praise of God

About this chapter

The invocation that opens the Kural — on the value of devotion to the Primal Being, and what the world gains by it. Sensitive, devotional verses; the modern narratives here especially need scholar review.

Ten verses stand between you and the rest of the book, and they are the ten most people skip. That is a pity, because the first line of the first one is a promise about the whole work: as the letter A begins every word, something stands first for the world. Valluvar is telling you, before he says anything else, that he intends to start at the beginning.

What you get here is not doctrine. Across the ten verses the Divine is named only by description — the one of pure knowledge, the one who has neither desire nor aversion, the one beyond comparison, an ocean of virtue — and never by a sectarian name. That restraint is deliberate, and it is why a book of practical ethics can open with reverence and still belong to everyone who reads it. The recurring image is small and physical: feet, and reaching them. Learning without that reaching bears no fruit; sorrow of mind is hard to shift without it; the head that will not bow is compared to a sense organ that cannot do its one job.

A word of honesty before you begin. These are devotional verses about matters people hold deeply and differently, and the modern readings offered alongside them are drafts by an AI, not settled interpretation. Read them as one careful attempt, and read the Tamil and Parimelazhagar beside them.

Kural 1✦ Narrative

Just as A stands first among all letters, the Primal Divine stands first for the world.AI draft
